Game of Thrones is without any doubt the most popular show on air right now, maybe ever. It has been the most pirated TV show for four consecutive years now. Fans are eagerly anticipating the return of the show for its seventh season. It is slated to premiere on HBO in April 2019. 1. The Porcelain Throne

In Season 1 there was an episode in which Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) eats the heart of a stag as part of a Dothraki tradition. The heart was made of a “gummy bear” like substance. The scene was quite grotesque as Daenerys gets completely covered in the blood of the stag. This resulted in a hilarious and rather embarrassing situation for Emilia. The blood was so sticky that when she went for a quick loo break, she actually got stuck to the toilet seat. Luckily she got free – otherwise, the Khaleesi would have had to settle for a porcelain throne.

2. Banned By The Turkish Military

In November 2014, it was reported that the Turkish army had banned Game of Thrones in their military schools. The reason given was that it was done to protect the young minds from “sexual exploitation, pornography, exhibitionism, abuse, harassment, and all negative behaviors“.

However, this wasn’t the first time that the show had created problems for the Turkish army. According to a report in Cumhuriyet (the Turkish daily newspaper), officers were kicked out of a military academy in Istanbul (in 2012), for allowing cadets to watch the show.

3. Name of Thrones

The popularity of the show is at an all-time high. Fans have even been naming their babies after the characters of the show. One such fan is famous cricketer Mahela Jayawardene. He and his wife, Christina, announced the name of their daughter as “Sansa Arya Jayawardene” to the world via Twitter.

4. There Is An Unaired Pilot

Very few people know that there is an unaired pilot of the show that was directed by Tom McCarthy (writer and director of Spotlight). The creators hated it and decided to shelve and re-shoot it. “We got everything wrong on a very basic level with the writing of it” show co-creator David Benioff told Variety.

So, what was the problem? Apparently, when the creators screened the show for their friends, none of them “realized that Jaime and Cersei were brother and sister, which is a major, major plot point that we had somehow failed to establish“.

Before Jerome Flynn played the skilled and dangerous sell-sword “Bronn” in Game of Thrones, he was one half of an English boy band called Robson & Jerome. The duo achieved quite a bit of success too. They had multiple no.1 singles and albums in the UK charts.

8. The Red Wedding Actually Happened (Sort Of)

George R.R. Martin has stated that he drew inspiration to write the “Red Wedding” based on two dark events in Scottish history – The Black Dinner Of (1440) and The Massacre Of Glencoe (1692). The Black Dinner – In 1440 (at Edinburgh Castle, Scotland), a Scottish King invited chiefs of Clan Douglas for a feast. The King massacred all the chiefs over the dinner table in a closed room, while a single drum played in the background.

The Massacre Of Glencoe – The Campbells killed thirty-eight MacDonalds from Clan MacDonald of Glencoe. The Campbells were actually guests of MacDonalds and had accepted their hospitality. The killings were done on the grounds that the MacDonalds had been slow to pledge their allegiance to the new king.

9. Surprise Cameo By George W. Bush

In Season 1 (Episode 10), Joffrey shows Sansa a row of heads of traitors mounted on pikes. One of the heads belonged to Ned Stark (Sean Bean) – Sansa’s father. However, right next to the Septa we see a decapitated head donning long hair. If you look closely you will notice that it is actually the former president of the USA – George W. Bush. 😂
